How to convert FCPXML to XML

Export your Final Cut project as FCPXML, then convert it here to Final Cut Pro 7 XML (xmeml) for Premiere. FCPXML and FCP7 XML are different formats, and renaming the extension does not convert the edit. Check clips and timing in the preview, import the XML in Premiere, and relink your original media. The loss report lists features you need to rebuild. Taking the edit to REAPER or Pro Tools instead? Neither imports XML. Use Final Cut to REAPER for a REAPER session, or Final Cut to AAF for Pro Tools: after converting, choose your media folder and it saves a session folder Pro Tools opens.

  1. Export FCPXML from Final Cut Pro

In Final Cut Pro choose File → Export XML and pick the current version, 1.10 or later. The converter reads 1.8 and up. Save the .fcpxml. A .fcpxmld bundle works too. Drop the Info.fcpxml from inside it.

  2. Add the .fcpxml and convert

Drag the file onto the drop zone. The preview draws the timeline it found, and the Kept/Changed line says what survives. Clips, names, timing, tracks and media paths carry over. Transitions become cuts. Titles, effects and markers are not read.

  3. Download your result

Download the converted file, or one ZIP when you convert a batch.

  4. Import in Premiere Pro

Choose File → Import and pick the .xml. Each Final Cut project arrives as a sequence in a bin named after the file. Relink media if Premiere asks, then rebuild transitions and titles.

  2. Convert to FCP7 XML, then use File → Import in Premiere to open the result.
  3. Relink the original footage and compare the edit, timing and conversion warnings.

The sample contains synthetic media paths. It demonstrates file conversion, not a verified import in every editor version. Effects and media do not transfer just because the XML opens.

Synthetic examples. Downloaded outputs are checked against the conversion engine; this does not certify an import in your editor version.

Final Cut Pro FCPXML and FCP7 XML (Premiere), explained

Premiere Pro has never read FCPXML. Final Cut Pro stopped writing FCP7 XML, the format Premiere does read, when version 10 shipped. The usual bridge is a paid utility. This converter reads the FCPXML directly. The format resource sets the frame rate, and each asset supplies the media path. The spine is the primary storyline. Connected clips are placed from their lane and their offset relative to the parent clip. Rational times snap to the frame grid, and the report flags anything off the grid. The report also lists what is not read. Transitions become hard cuts at the clip boundaries. Titles and generators are skipped. Effects, retimes and keyframes are dropped, and markers are not carried. A compound clip is flattened one level when its media is in the file. Multicam and synchronized clips are read as their first angle.

Move a Final Cut edit into Premiere as FCP7 XML. Check the preview and warnings, then relink your footage. It is free to start, encrypted in transit, and converts a whole batch into one ZIP — sign in when you need large, high-volume jobs.

FCPXML to XML FAQ

Does Premiere Pro open FCPXML directly?

No. Premiere Pro imports FCP7 XML (the older <xmeml> format) and has no FCPXML importer. This converter writes that FCP7 XML from the FCPXML.

Which FCPXML versions are read?

FCPXML 1.8 through 1.14, which covers Final Cut Pro 10.4 to the current release. Older exports from Final Cut Pro X 10.0 to 10.3 usually work too, because the elements used here have not changed.

Where do connected clips end up?

The primary storyline is V1, and A1 for its audio. A connected clip on lane 1 lands on V2, lane 2 on V3, and so on. Audio lanes below the storyline become A1, A2 and so on. Offsets resolve relative to the parent clip, the way Final Cut positions them.

What happens to transitions?

They become hard cuts, and the conversion says so. The clip boundaries stay where Final Cut had them, so you can re-add the transition in Premiere at the same point.

Are titles, effects and markers carried?

No. Titles and generators have no media file and are skipped. Effects, retimes, colour and keyframes are not read. Markers and keywords are left out. The conversion warnings list each one, so nothing goes missing silently.

Will Premiere find the media?

Each clip carries the absolute media path from the FCPXML asset, with Windows paths converted. If the footage moved, Premiere shows its Link Media dialog and relinks by file name.

Can I open the XML in REAPER or Pro Tools?

No. REAPER and Pro Tools do not import FCP7 XML. For REAPER, Final Cut to REAPER writes an .rpp session with the audio edits, fades, gain and markers. For Pro Tools, use Final Cut to AAF. After converting, choose your media folder: it saves an AAF and a mono WAV of every channel the edit uses, and Pro Tools imports it with File → Import → Session Data.

Is the project uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the FCPXML and writes the XML. Only the size and the result are metered.

Guides for this workflow

Questions, answered

Where are my files processed?

In your browser. The file never leaves your computer, and CutConvert only records that a conversion happened. We never see, store, sell or share your media.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Files up to about an hour of footage convert free on every converter. CapCut projects are free up to 500 KB. Guests get five conversions a month; a free account has no monthly cap within the free size caps. Bigger files are $3 each, or $5 for a project conversion from one program to another. Pro is $9 a month ($90 a year) for files up to 50 MB. Studio is $19 a month ($190 a year) for files up to 500 MB.

What do I get when I convert multiple files?

One ZIP with every converted file. A single file comes back on its own. Press + to add more output formats: they go in the same ZIP, and each file still counts as one conversion.

Which formats are supported?

Projects in: Premiere .prproj, DaVinci Resolve .drp, Avid AAF and bins, Final Cut FCPXML, CapCut drafts and Audition sessions. Projects out: FCP7 XML, FCPXML, Resolve .drp, AAF, CapCut and REAPER, plus CMX 3600 EDL and shot-list CSV. Transitions, markers, titles, keyframes, levels, speed changes and nested sequences carry over wherever the target app can hold them. Captions: SRT, WebVTT, SBV, ASS, TTML, DFXP, iTT, SCC, MCC, EBU-STL, Avid caption TXT, timed CSV, Word and plain text. Transcripts: Whisper, WhisperX, AssemblyAI, Deepgram, Rev.ai and CapCut JSON, Premiere transcript JSON and .prtranscript, and Rev, Otter and Word-style text. Styling, placement and speakers come along where the output supports them.

Can I pick a frame rate?

Yes. For EDL and Avid caption output, choose 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97 or 30 fps, or let CutConvert detect it from your source.
