How to convert Final Cut to picture/audio AAF

Convert Final Cut Pro FCPXML into an audio-only AAF. When the edit has supported picture, you also get a separate picture/audio AAF. Picture-only edits and camera alternatives can produce picture AAF files too.

  1. Export XML from Final Cut

Use File → Export XML with linked media available.

  2. Convert and review

Drop the FCPXML and read the warnings for the selected edit and source companions.

  3. Choose your handoff

In Media Composer, import the -picture.aaf for picture and sound, or the plain .aaf for sound only. Pick one: importing both into one edit duplicates the audio. For Pro Tools, choose your media folder under For Pro Tools after converting, and import the session folder's AAF.

Final Cut project XML and Picture/audio AAF, explained

The picture AAF keeps linked cuts, supported positive retimes, static crop and basic editable titles. The audio AAF keeps supported timing, gain envelopes, markers and source channels. Both reference external media, so nothing is rendered or embedded. Editors differ in how they read AAF. DaVinci Resolve has ignored standard AAF processing controls, so use XML or .drp for Resolve. Read the report for every reported loss.

You get an audio-only AAF and a separate -picture.aaf with supported picture edits. Import the one you need and relink media. It is free to start, encrypted in transit, and converts a whole batch into one ZIP — sign in when you need large, high-volume jobs.

Final Cut to picture/audio AAF FAQ

Is media embedded?

No. Both handoffs reference the original media. Relink it in the receiving editor.

Are all picture features preserved?

No. We write supported cuts, crop, positive retimes and static basic titles. Proprietary graphics, complex effects, curved or reverse retimes and native multicam controls may not carry over. If no supported picture can be written, there is no picture file, and the report explains why.

How do I open it in Pro Tools?

After converting, choose your media folder under For Pro Tools. Pro Tools reads only the first channel of a camera file from an AAF, so CutConvert makes a mono 24-bit WAV of every channel the edit uses, with 3 seconds either side, and saves them with an AAF that links them. In Pro Tools, choose File → Import → Session Data and pick the .aaf. It runs on your computer in Chrome or Edge, and nothing is uploaded. The AAFs in the ZIP link your original files, for Media Composer.

Questions, answered

Where are my files processed?

In your browser. The file never leaves your computer, and CutConvert only records that a conversion happened. We never see, store, sell or share your media.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Files up to about an hour of footage convert free on every converter. CapCut projects are free up to 500 KB. Guests get five conversions a month; a free account has no monthly cap within the free size caps. Bigger files are $3 each, or $5 for a project conversion from one program to another. Pro is $9 a month ($90 a year) for files up to 50 MB. Studio is $19 a month ($190 a year) for files up to 500 MB.

What do I get when I convert multiple files?

One ZIP with every converted file. A single file comes back on its own. Press + to add more output formats: they go in the same ZIP, and each file still counts as one conversion.

Which formats are supported?

Projects in: Premiere .prproj, DaVinci Resolve .drp, Avid AAF and bins, Final Cut FCPXML, CapCut drafts and Audition sessions. Projects out: FCP7 XML, FCPXML, Resolve .drp, AAF, CapCut and REAPER, plus CMX 3600 EDL and shot-list CSV. Transitions, markers, titles, keyframes, levels, speed changes and nested sequences carry over wherever the target app can hold them. Captions: SRT, WebVTT, SBV, ASS, TTML, DFXP, iTT, SCC, MCC, EBU-STL, Avid caption TXT, timed CSV, Word and plain text. Transcripts: Whisper, WhisperX, AssemblyAI, Deepgram, Rev.ai and CapCut JSON, Premiere transcript JSON and .prtranscript, and Rev, Otter and Word-style text. Styling, placement and speakers come along where the output supports them.

Can I pick a frame rate?

Yes. For EDL and Avid caption output, choose 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97 or 30 fps, or let CutConvert detect it from your source.
