How to convert AAF to FCPXML

Convert an Avid AAF to FCPXML for Final Cut Pro online. CutConvert reads the .aaf in your browser without Media Composer. It writes FCPXML 1.10, the format Final Cut Pro imports. Each composition becomes a Final Cut project, with every clip on its own lane and its source in and out. Each media file gets one reference so Final Cut relinks to the footage. Nothing is uploaded.

  1. Add your .aaf file

Drag the Avid AAF onto the drop zone. Your browser reads its compositions, tracks, clips, source ranges and media paths locally.

  2. Convert

Press Convert. The preview shows the first lines of the FCPXML, and the Kept/Changed line says what survives. Clips, names, timing and media paths carry over. Supported ordered position, scale, rotation, opacity and static crop are translated with source-clock keys. The report lists sampled curves and the controls you need to recreate.

  3. Download your result

Download the converted file, or one ZIP when you convert a batch.

  4. Import in Final Cut Pro

Choose File → Import → XML and pick the .fcpxml. Each composition arrives as a project in an event named after the file. Relink the media if Final Cut asks and check motion and transitions. Then recreate the controls the report names.

Avid AAF and FCPXML (Final Cut Pro), explained

This page translates Avid AAF directly to Final Cut Pro FCPXML. The converter reads the .aaf and writes FCPXML 1.10. Each clip becomes a connected clip on a lane above or below one storyline gap that spans the composition. Video track 1 is lane 1, video track 2 is lane 2, audio track 1 is lane -1, and so on. The Final Cut layout matches the Media Composer track layout. Video lanes carry only picture and audio lanes only sound, so nothing doubles. Final Cut requires timing on the frame grid of the composition rate (23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 or 60), and the converter writes it that way. The composition start timecode is kept. When the AAF states the timeline size, the converter keeps it. Otherwise it uses 1920×1080 and says so in the report. Standard motion and opacity use source-clock keys. Eased or held curves are sampled, and the report notes it. Animated crop keeps only its starting margins. We haven't checked how native Avid rendering and proprietary effects come through.

AAF to FCPXML FAQ

Does it need Media Composer or Final Cut Pro installed?

Neither. The .aaf is read and the FCPXML written in your browser. You need Final Cut Pro only to open the result.

Why FCPXML and not the XML converter?

The XML converter writes FCP7 XML (xmeml). Premiere and Resolve read it, but Final Cut Pro X and later do not. FCPXML is Final Cut Pro's own format. This page writes version 1.10, which current Final Cut Pro imports.

What does Final Cut show after import?

An event named after the file, with one project per composition. Inside is a storyline gap the length of the edit. Each source track gets one connected storyline above or below it (V1 on lane 1, A1 on lane -1, and so on), which gives transitions between clips a place to live. It is not a magnetic primary storyline. Select the clips and use Create Storyline if you want one.

What is not carried?

The report for your file covers transition and marker handling. Supported standard motion, opacity, static crop and constant speed are translated. Proprietary effects, grades and animated crop need recreating. Clips whose media had no file path in the project become placeholder gaps of the same length with a note, so the timing stays intact.

Will the media relink?

Each media file is written once as an asset with a file URL to the path stored in the .aaf. If the footage sits at that path on the Mac that imports the XML, Final Cut links it directly. Otherwise use File → Relink Files and point at the folder.

Which frame rates and sizes are supported?

All standard rates: 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60, written as exact rationals on the frame grid. Known frame geometry is kept. When the sequence size is unknown, the converter assumes 1920×1080 and reports it. Check the project size in Final Cut.

Is the project uploaded?

No. Conversion runs in your browser. The site records only the file name and size for metering.

Questions, answered

Where are my files processed?

In your browser. The file never leaves your computer, and CutConvert only records that a conversion happened. We never see, store, sell or share your media.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Files up to about an hour of footage convert free on every converter. CapCut projects are free up to 500 KB. Guests get five conversions a month; a free account has no monthly cap within the free size caps. Bigger files are $3 each, or $5 for a project conversion from one program to another. Pro is $9 a month ($90 a year) for files up to 50 MB. Studio is $19 a month ($190 a year) for files up to 500 MB.

What do I get when I convert multiple files?

One ZIP with every converted file. A single file comes back on its own. Press + to add more output formats: they go in the same ZIP, and each file still counts as one conversion.

Which formats are supported?

Projects in: Premiere .prproj, DaVinci Resolve .drp, Avid AAF and bins, Final Cut FCPXML, CapCut drafts and Audition sessions. Projects out: FCP7 XML, FCPXML, Resolve .drp, AAF, CapCut and REAPER, plus CMX 3600 EDL and shot-list CSV. Transitions, markers, titles, keyframes, levels, speed changes and nested sequences carry over wherever the target app can hold them. Captions: SRT, WebVTT, SBV, ASS, TTML, DFXP, iTT, SCC, MCC, EBU-STL, Avid caption TXT, timed CSV, Word and plain text. Transcripts: Whisper, WhisperX, AssemblyAI, Deepgram, Rev.ai and CapCut JSON, Premiere transcript JSON and .prtranscript, and Rev, Otter and Word-style text. Styling, placement and speakers come along where the output supports them.

Can I pick a frame rate?

Yes. For EDL and Avid caption output, choose 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97 or 30 fps, or let CutConvert detect it from your source.
