How to convert FCPXML to EDL

Convert a Final Cut Pro FCPXML to a CMX 3600 EDL online. Final Cut Pro dropped EDL export years ago. Editors who need an EDL for a conform, a colour session or an older system have had to go through another application. CutConvert reads the FCPXML in your browser and writes one EDL per project. Each EDL has V1 with A1 and A2, cuts and dissolves the CMX way, and constant speed changes as M2 lines. Markers become locator comments, and the EDL carries clip names and a reel list.

  1. Add your FCPXML

Drag in the .fcpxml or the .fcpxmld bundle exported from Final Cut Pro (File → Export XML).

  2. Convert to EDL

Press Convert. Each project in the file becomes an EDL. Extra video lanes become their own EDLs, the way Resolve handles them.

  3. Download your result

Download the converted file, or one ZIP when you convert a batch.

Final Cut Pro FCPXML and CMX 3600 EDL, explained

A CMX 3600 EDL is the oldest interchange format still in daily use. Each event lists reel, track, transition, source in and out, and record in and out. Final Cut Pro cannot write one. This converter reads the FCPXML into the timeline model the site's other Final Cut converters use and flattens compound clips into their clips. It writes the EDL with the same rules as the Premiere and Avid EDL converters. Dissolves are two-line D events. Dips and wipes become dissolves with the original name in a comment. Speed changes are M2 lines, and markers are * LOC: locators that Resolve and Avid read.

Final Cut Pro can't export an EDL. This writes one from the FCPXML, with dissolves, source and record timecode, speed changes and markers. It is free to start, encrypted in transit, and converts a whole batch into one ZIP — sign in when you need large, high-volume jobs.

FCPXML to EDL FAQ

Which tracks make it into the EDL?

V1 (the primary storyline, or lane 1 when everything is connected) with A1 and A2. Further video lanes go into separate EDLs. Audio beyond A2 is left out and reported.

What happens to transitions and speed changes?

A cross dissolve is a two-line D event with its length. Constant speed changes are M2 motion-memory lines. Keyframed speed ramps keep only their average speed.

Are markers kept?

Yes, as * LOC: locator comments with the marker text. DaVinci Resolve and Avid Media Composer read them on import. Premiere ignores them.

Does it need Final Cut Pro?

No. Your browser reads the FCPXML. Nothing is uploaded and no Apple software is required.

Questions, answered

Where are my files processed?

In your browser. The file never leaves your computer, and CutConvert only records that a conversion happened. We never see, store, sell or share your media.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Files up to about an hour of footage convert free on every converter. CapCut projects are free up to 500 KB. Guests get five conversions a month; a free account has no monthly cap within the free size caps. Bigger files are $3 each, or $5 for a project conversion from one program to another. Pro is $9 a month ($90 a year) for files up to 50 MB. Studio is $19 a month ($190 a year) for files up to 500 MB.

What do I get when I convert multiple files?

One ZIP with every converted file. A single file comes back on its own. Press + to add more output formats: they go in the same ZIP, and each file still counts as one conversion.

Which formats are supported?

Projects in: Premiere .prproj, DaVinci Resolve .drp, Avid AAF and bins, Final Cut FCPXML, CapCut drafts and Audition sessions. Projects out: FCP7 XML, FCPXML, Resolve .drp, AAF, CapCut and REAPER, plus CMX 3600 EDL and shot-list CSV. Transitions, markers, titles, keyframes, levels, speed changes and nested sequences carry over wherever the target app can hold them. Captions: SRT, WebVTT, SBV, ASS, TTML, DFXP, iTT, SCC, MCC, EBU-STL, Avid caption TXT, timed CSV, Word and plain text. Transcripts: Whisper, WhisperX, AssemblyAI, Deepgram, Rev.ai and CapCut JSON, Premiere transcript JSON and .prtranscript, and Rev, Otter and Word-style text. Styling, placement and speakers come along where the output supports them.

Can I pick a frame rate?

Yes. For EDL and Avid caption output, choose 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97 or 30 fps, or let CutConvert detect it from your source.
