How to convert CapCut to Avid AAF

Convert a CapCut desktop project to Avid Media Composer. Drop in the project's draft_info.json and download a file Avid Media Composer opens with your cuts, speed changes, transforms, volume, fades, transitions and text.

  1. Find the project file

On a Mac it's in ~/Movies/CapCut/User Data/Projects/com.lveditor.draft/, one folder per project. On Windows it's in %LOCALAPPDATA%\CapCut\User Data\Projects\com.lveditor.draft\. Drag the folder with your project's name here. A project with several timelines brings them all. Or take draft_info.json from it (draft_content.json on Windows), which holds the main timeline.

  2. Drop it here and convert

The converter reads the CapCut timeline. The main track and overlays become video tracks. Each clip's own sound and your music go on audio tracks, and text and captions become titles. Media Composer imports the AAF as a sequence and master clips that link to your media files.

  3. Open it in Avid Media Composer

In a bin, choose File > Input > Import Media. Link the media with AMA if Media Composer asks. Keep the media where CapCut had it, or relink it once in Avid Media Composer.

CapCut project and Avid Media Composer AAF, explained

CapCut stores a project as JSON. Each clip records its trim in microseconds, its speed, and its position and scale relative to the frame. CutConvert reads those values as CapCut 9.5 writes them and rebuilds them in Avid Media Composer's own terms. A clip CapCut scaled to 120% of the frame lands at the same size, and a crop keeps the framing CapCut showed. CapCut's effects, filters, stickers and text animations have no counterpart in Avid Media Composer. The conversion report lists each one by name so you can recreate what you need.

CapCut can't export to Avid Media Composer. Drop the project's draft_info.json (draft_content.json on Windows) and Avid opens your edit. It is free to start, encrypted in transit, and converts a whole batch into one ZIP — sign in when you need large, high-volume jobs.

CapCut to Avid AAF FAQ

Does CapCut have to be installed?

No. The project file has the whole edit. Avid Media Composer needs the media files themselves. The conversion runs in your browser, so neither the project nor your media is uploaded.

What about CapCut effects and filters?

They're CapCut's own and don't exist in Avid Media Composer. They're left out and listed by name in the conversion report. Cuts, speed, position, scale, rotation, opacity, crop, keyframes, volume, fades, dissolves and text all carry over.

My clips come in offline. Why?

The project points to your media where CapCut found it. Library clips from CapCut's own stock and music live in CapCut's cache folder. Relink those in Avid Media Composer or swap them for your own files.

Is it free?

Projects up to 500 KB convert free, which covers a short edit. A full-length project needs a one-time project conversion or a Pro plan.

Guides for this workflow

Questions, answered

Where are my files processed?

In your browser. The file never leaves your computer, and CutConvert only records that a conversion happened. We never see, store, sell or share your media.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Files up to about an hour of footage convert free on every converter. CapCut projects are free up to 500 KB. Guests get five conversions a month; a free account has no monthly cap within the free size caps. Bigger files are $3 each, or $5 for a project conversion from one program to another. Pro is $9 a month ($90 a year) for files up to 50 MB. Studio is $19 a month ($190 a year) for files up to 500 MB.

What do I get when I convert multiple files?

One ZIP with every converted file. A single file comes back on its own. Press + to add more output formats: they go in the same ZIP, and each file still counts as one conversion.

Which formats are supported?

Projects in: Premiere .prproj, DaVinci Resolve .drp, Avid AAF and bins, Final Cut FCPXML, CapCut drafts and Audition sessions. Projects out: FCP7 XML, FCPXML, Resolve .drp, AAF, CapCut and REAPER, plus CMX 3600 EDL and shot-list CSV. Transitions, markers, titles, keyframes, levels, speed changes and nested sequences carry over wherever the target app can hold them. Captions: SRT, WebVTT, SBV, ASS, TTML, DFXP, iTT, SCC, MCC, EBU-STL, Avid caption TXT, timed CSV, Word and plain text. Transcripts: Whisper, WhisperX, AssemblyAI, Deepgram, Rev.ai and CapCut JSON, Premiere transcript JSON and .prtranscript, and Rev, Otter and Word-style text. Styling, placement and speakers come along where the output supports them.

Can I pick a frame rate?

Yes. For EDL and Avid caption output, choose 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97 or 30 fps, or let CutConvert detect it from your source.
