How to convert ASS to SRT

Convert ASS to SRT online. CutConvert reads Advanced SubStation Alpha (.ass) and SubStation Alpha (.ssa) scripts. It strips the styling override tags and writes timed SRT subtitles that any player or editor accepts.

  1. Add your ASS/SSA files

Drag your .ass or .ssa subtitle scripts onto the drop zone, or click to browse.

  2. Convert ASS to SRT

Press Convert. Each Dialogue line becomes a numbered SRT cue. Italics, bold, underline and colour overrides become SRT tags, and other override tags are dropped. Line breaks and timing carry over.

  3. Download your result

Download the converted file, or one ZIP when you convert a batch.

ASS/SSA subtitles and SRT subtitles, explained

ASS/SSA is the styling-rich format of Aegisub and fansub groups, with positioned text, karaoke effects and fonts. Most players and NLEs want plain SRT. The converter parses the [Events] section and maps each Dialogue line to an SRT cue. It converts centisecond timing to milliseconds and keeps the Name field as a speaker label when it is set.

Turn ASS/SSA subtitle scripts into SRT. Basic styling, timing and line breaks stay. Other override tags are dropped. It is free to start, encrypted in transit, and converts a whole batch into one ZIP — sign in when you need large, high-volume jobs.

ASS to SRT FAQ

What happens to the styling tags?

Styling overrides carry over. {\i1}, {\b1}, {\u1} and {\c&H…&} become SRT italics, bold, underline and colour tags. SRT has no equivalent for placement and effect overrides like {\pos} and karaoke, so those are dropped. A top alignment ({\an8}) is kept for outputs that can place a cue. Text, line breaks (\N) and timing all carry over. The losses come from SRT itself, not from the converter.

Does it handle both .ass and .ssa?

Yes. The converter reads the Format line of the [Events] section, so it parses both the v4+ (.ass) and older v4 (.ssa) field layouts.

Are speaker names kept?

Yes, when a Dialogue line has a real Name (actor) field. That name becomes a speaker label in the SRT cue. Style-only placeholders are ignored.

Will the timing stay frame-accurate?

Yes. ASS timestamps are centisecond-precise (H:MM:SS.cc) and convert exactly to SRT milliseconds. Nothing is re-timed and nothing drifts.

Can I convert a whole season at once?

Yes. Drop a batch of .ass files and download one ZIP of SRTs. Guests get 5 conversions a month, up to 100 KB per file. A free account has no monthly cap within the free size caps and converts up to 100 files per batch. Pro is $9 a month for 100 conversions of files up to 50 MB.

Questions, answered

Where are my files processed?

In your browser. The file never leaves your computer, and CutConvert only records that a conversion happened. We never see, store, sell or share your media.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Files up to about an hour of footage convert free on every converter. CapCut projects are free up to 500 KB. Guests get five conversions a month; a free account has no monthly cap within the free size caps. Bigger files are $3 each, or $5 for a project conversion from one program to another. Pro is $9 a month ($90 a year) for files up to 50 MB. Studio is $19 a month ($190 a year) for files up to 500 MB.

What do I get when I convert multiple files?

One ZIP with every converted file. A single file comes back on its own. Press + to add more output formats: they go in the same ZIP, and each file still counts as one conversion.

Which formats are supported?

Projects in: Premiere .prproj, DaVinci Resolve .drp, Avid AAF and bins, Final Cut FCPXML, CapCut drafts and Audition sessions. Projects out: FCP7 XML, FCPXML, Resolve .drp, AAF, CapCut and REAPER, plus CMX 3600 EDL and shot-list CSV. Transitions, markers, titles, keyframes, levels, speed changes and nested sequences carry over wherever the target app can hold them. Captions: SRT, WebVTT, SBV, ASS, TTML, DFXP, iTT, SCC, MCC, EBU-STL, Avid caption TXT, timed CSV, Word and plain text. Transcripts: Whisper, WhisperX, AssemblyAI, Deepgram, Rev.ai and CapCut JSON, Premiere transcript JSON and .prtranscript, and Rev, Otter and Word-style text. Styling, placement and speakers come along where the output supports them.

Can I pick a frame rate?

Yes. For EDL and Avid caption output, choose 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97 or 30 fps, or let CutConvert detect it from your source.
